PEST CONTROL WASPS

Pest control wasps successfully comes from understanding the little beasties.

"Hell hath no furry like a woman scorned", goes the saying. Did you know the wasp that just stung you was a girl? And to that an angry girl!

Wasp nests are an all girl affair. Boys or males make an appearance once a year in spring. They fly off, find a mate and with their job being done perish.

When Auckland customers accidentally come into contact with wasps, it always ends with some painful stings!

Wasp's being social insects have specific roles for all of the wasps in the nest. This includes sentry wasps. When provoked they fly out and sting any threat to the nest. Unfortunately that's you.

TYPES OF WASPS

There are three types of pest wasps in Auckland.

  • European Wasps. Also called the Common Wasp.  A medium sized wasp , not as aggressive as the German Wasp.  Wasp nests are mostly unseen,  example in a retaining wall or in the ground.
  • German Wasps. Largest and most aggressive of the wasps species in New Zealand. Yellow and black they often build their nests in cavities. Mostly you can't see the nest, just the wasps flying in and out. They fly with legs tucked into their body.
  • Paper Wasps. Two species in New Zealand. Asian paper wasp, yellow and back. Australian paper wasp, red and black.  Both species fly with their legs hanging down. Both species you can see their nest. Their nests can  get to size of grapefruit. These wasps are less aggressive than the Common or German Wasp. This is countered by the fact than once they are provoked they are very tenacious and have the most painful wasp sting in NZ. You will never forget their sting.

HOW DO YOU GET RID OF WASPS?

For the eradication of German and European Wasp nests we use an insecticide dust. The dust works very quickly and the nest is exterminated. All the wasps inside the nest are quickly killed. As Wasps  trapped outside the nest,  use the nest to feed, so they also soon perish.  For  paper wasps we use a  spray that is very quick acting, killing all the wasps instantaneously. We remove and destroy the nest where possible.

Please note we only destroy wasps nests.  You need to FIND the nest before you call us.

WASP SWARM OR BEE SWARM?

In spring we get calls from customers saying that they have a swarm of wasps outside their house. Wasps do not swarm and it is actually honey Bees swarming. When a bee swarm is outside a structure we refer this to the Bee Association (0275479276)  and they will relocate your bees ( often free of charge). The Honey Bees get re-homed and everyone is happy!

If the bees are inside a structure there is NO ALTERNATIVE if they pose a risk they need to be destroyed.

A: Nothing. Please leave the nest alone.

A: Once the nest is destroyed it can't come back to life. Once the queen is dead the entire nest dies. Sometimes we take the nest away too

Q: WASPS: I SEE LOTS OF WASPS AROUND MY DECK OUTSIDE WHY IS THAT?

A: Wasps harvest wood to make into paper for their nests. If you have unpainted wood then it could be bringing in the wasps so they can harvest it. You may wish to paint or varnish the wood and the wasps may go else where.

A: NO. We don't offer a wasp nest finding service. Please find the nest then call us.
